Germany

Our wake up call came at 4AM.  We were on the Air France flight on time for Paris later that morning and caught our connecting flight for Berlin.  Our bus and guide were waiting for us at the Berlin Airport.

On the way to our Leonardo Hotel in the city, our guide introduced us to the rich history of Berlin.  We saw the skyline from atop our cruise boat on the River Spree under a clear blue sky and a setting sun.

The next day, we drove down the autobahn to Wittenberg where our young guide and none other than Martin Luther met us at the historic Palace Church.  We learned about the transformation of Martin Luther, and how his Ninety Five Theses  triggered a Reformation circa 1520 that would be a paradigm shift for all of Europe.  Our guide paid special attention to the former nun who became Luther’s wife and partner – Katharina.

Today we visited Erfurt where Luther earned his ordination and his doctorate before moving to the professor’s chair at Wittenberg.  Then on to Weimart, the cultural center for the arts, music, literature, drama, gardens and palaces.

We enjoyed world class cuisine at the fine Leonardo Hotel of Weimart.

    Ken,
Thanks again for your great photos as you continue to “tell the story” of the journey. More picturesque villages with their historical sites. Sorry we could not be there.

Dad, was that a “bier” you were partaking of in the shot of the group all sitting around the dining table? I would have expected wine like a German riesling but then again one can’t visit Germany without having a “pint”. Way to go in mixing up your choice of liquid refreshment.
Happy Fathers Day a few days early.

    Hi Ron & Marsha,

I can’t believe your trip is almost over. I’m going to miss this blog as I felt like I got to go along with you and see what you were seeing. I was looking at the picture of you and Ron in the photos and I had called Jim in to see it (it is a great picture of you by the way) and there in my inbox came an email from you. Weird that it came right at the moment when your picture was on my computer. Ha!

I can’t wait to hear all about your trip. I loved seeing the Berlin photos as we did a lot of walking in that city. We were headed toward that space needle building (which Ken took a great photo of) from the Brandenburg gate and I kept saying it was right there and so close but we kept walking and walking and it took us a lot longer then we thought. We still laugh about that now. I’m sure you have amazing stories as well as lots of memories and laughs. I’m looking forward to talking with you.

By the way – can you believe it is our 38th wedding anniversary today! How time flies! Jim’s watching the final Laker game and I’m writing to you. Ha! Have a safe journey home.

    Love & miss you,
    Jim & Pat
